Below, you can read the official write-up and invitation, but first, here are some notes on experiencing the show from within:

1. SYMBOLS. Sarah Smalls' dress and some of the other garments had holes cut in them. Granted, I get fixated on odd details sometimes, but what an incredible coincidence that she was garbed in cloth that reflected the circles of breath and breathing present throughout the tableau. Its transparent layers delicately floated like draped stairs, surrounding her as we did and do, multi-layered, but unified in one hovering fold. I doubt that this was intentional on the part of the designer (I would love to find out for sure), but even so, it was one of many synchronous alignments this Tableau has gathered, and it made me smile...

2. BEING. Sometimes it seems like it's difficult to BE anywhere. In this case I mean physically, though it can apply in other ways as well. No matter what poses we held during this epic Tableau Vivant, I know we all struggled to Hold On. I was struck by how the position itself was almost unimportant in determining the difficulty of staying put. While we froze and tried not to move a muscle, I couldn't help but think that it was the presence of all of you, struggling silently in proximity to create something beautiful together that made it possible to remain still. And the conviction in each of us that this is not only worthwhile, but crucial to building this Other Place, like a portal through culture to abstract psychological intimacy, was incredible to experience. I never once heard anyone say, "I don't feel comfortable addressing this question".

As a bit of a hermit, I have always instinctively shied away from large groups and mass participatory activities with great suspicion and an almost physical sense of aversion. I think I can safely say that this is the first time I have ever trusted a large group of human beings so completely, and that was made possible by Sarah and each of her brilliant collaborators' staggeringly masterful vision, and by the unique contribution of each person involved. A lot of us are artists, creators, teachers, givers of one kind or another, so we have all dedicated our lives in some way to creating beautiful connections, worlds, lives, and experiences. One of the things that made this group experience so distinctly different from other group actions is that we were all there with no conflicting motives, and we all believed deeply in the importance of bringing this work of art to life. Belief shapes everyone's unconscious inner realms, and in these few days, our belief in a common goal was both consciously chosen, kindly acted upon, and completely shared. That is part of why this piece is masterful beyond even "its own" goals, and it is a true testament to the character of Sarah and all her cohorts that they were able to so lovingly organize so many different people into a place of safety and comfortable communication to attain an untainted, transcendent creation. I feel so lucky to be a participant in this time.

This May, photographer and artist, Sarah Small, is planning to produce the most ambitious performance of her career. Tableau Vivant of the Delirium Constructions will present a unique blend of art forms: theater, performance art, photography, fashion, and both classical and contemporary musical arrangements.
Photographer Sarah Small leads us on a revelatory journey through the interactive creative process and world-premiere of her most ambitious work. Inspired by history’s striking French “living pictures”, the Tableau Vivant is a revolutionary 120-model live performance installation that has evolved from Sarah’s internationally acclaimed photographic series. Through a diverse cast of 120 people from all walks of life, Small presents a microcosm of human experience and interaction that crosses gender, age, race, and class boundaries. With raw passion, unique humor, and relentless optimism, she navigates the intimate desires, paralyzing fears, bitter failures, and transcendent triumphs of her new born artistic family.

After experimenting with a series of smaller tableaux vivants (“living pictures”) for the past two years, the May performance represents a culmination of her work and promises to be the cultural event of the season.

The performance on Monday, May 23rd and Tuesday, May 24th will be at the historic Williamsburg Savings Bank, now known as Skylight One Hanson, in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Ages 21 and over please.

The Seattle Times describes accordion troubadour Jason Webley as "one of Seattle's most talented musicians." Since his beginnings as a street performer, Webley has built a loyal following around the globe with his uninhibited live performances. His relentless touring schedule has taken him to over 30 countries, most concerts ending with the entire crowd locked arm-in-arm, swaying and singing.

Webley has released six albums and numerous collaborations on his own record label. He organizes and headlines the annual Monsters of Accordion tour and has shared the stage with the likes of The Avett Brothers, Devotchka and Regina Spektor. Recently, Webley finished a world tour with Amanda Palmer of The Dresden Dolls as one-half of the duo Evelyn Evelyn.

At the end of 2011, Webley will be taking a break from touring, making this special show his last Brooklyn appearance for some time.

In downtown Albany's historic State Room, from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Once a premier function venue for Albany's rich and famous, featuring musicians like Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, the ballroom in the former DeWitt Clinton Hotel at 142 State Street will swing again with modern day swells and patrons of the arts. Building on a rich tradition of fashion and art, this year's gala will be one of the most memorable in gallery history.

A spectacular theme highlighting surreal and eclectic elements of the early century will be interwoven into the entertainment and visual tapestry of the event. "We Are But Dust", by Isaac Gardner, the Santa Claus of existentialism

I've gone back to see Isaac Gardner's one-man play "We Are But Dust" three times now, and every time, I am constantly amazed by how phenomenally each psychological twist and tactic opens up a plethora of philosophical intricacies using such deceptively simple symbols in wildly inventive conjunction with each other.

Even before the show begins, a sound-scape descends upon the audience, tuning our ears to the non-verbal language that will carry us through the poly-leveled interactive narrative of this tale. It's difficult to describe anything in this play without giving away the joyous surprises it contains. At the end of the most recent performance, the person to the right of me was laughing hysterically, and the person to my left was crying tears of comprehension, but mentioning the incredible range of emotions and concepts triggered by experiencing this immersing show doesn't really do it justice. Simply being there is a great way to get to know a new friend or romantic interest you bring along, a lovely way to see a new side of a long-time co-conspirator. Just being there is like opening a gift you didn't know you were hoping for. I want to put a ribbon on the whole evening and give it to everyone I know.

Can a thing be simultaneously joyous, sparse, and maximalist? Now I say, yes! The interactive inversion of expectations and possibilities for interpretation in the play "We Are But Dust" keep reminding me of a combination of Samuel Beckett's writing and the revolutionary implications of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", the first massively accessible film to combine a completely real world with a communally shared artistic reality. While there are no cartoons in this play, there is a phenomenal interplay between the meta-levels of the 'reality' of the characters, that of the audience, and our roles in the perceptive landscapes of others.

In one scene, an old man enters a room full of clocks. We the audience can't see the clocks, but we know they are there. The old man communicates the clock-ness of the space to us clearly without using any words. He lifts his hand away from a wall in such a way that the area beneath it suddenly becomes strongly inhabited by the essence of a clock. We can almost see it rise out of the empty wall into our palpable shared reality. Many of the clocks are not working. We all know this, and it does not immediately occur to us to question whether the old man is mad, or whether the clocks are there at all. The old man walks over to one time-piece (in this time-based piece) and picks it up, winds it... A ticking begins. We accept it as the ticking clock and at the same time we see that the old man is creating the ticking sound with a clacker in his right hand. As he goes around the room, winding clocks and creating impressively illustrative poly-rhythms, the room comes to life before our very ears.

Is this old man aware that he is making the clocks' ticks? Is he insane, and if so, is his delusion a beautiful and life-enriching poem? Are the clocks real and we simply aren't in a place to see them without a leap of belief? To what extent can we accept the old man's world? After all, there is no old man. We know in our brains that he is a young man. And his world is increasingly becoming our world. We so willingly opened our world to encompass his, and this automatic acceptance is full of questions that now become ours.

Before we have time to internally spiral through winding wonderings about whether the old man is actually fixing imaginary time-markers in an empty room, he transforms an audience-member into a clock. Amazing, I know, but he 'really' does! With one simple sound-effect and through continuity of newly-created symbolic motions, the significance of the time-narrative is transformed into an entirely participatory realm and a new series of definitions and translations.

This is just one very tiny example out of many lovely shifts that exist in this sweet and surprisingly intricate play. There are surprises and all sorts of lovely sights and sounds and worlds, but above all else, going to see this play is really FUN! So RSVP, bring a friend, bring a lover, bring a grin, and be ready to laugh and play in the wonderful world of Isaac Gardner.

If you crossed Tom Waits, Jeff Buckley, and Diamanda Galas..

... it MIGHT sound as beautiful as this. Hear the music: Click here to listen to the diabolical and heart-wrenching music of Shayfer James, a villainous singer/ song-writer/ multi-instrumentalist who just returned from a gig in Hong Kong to grace our northeastern ears with his melodic Strange.

The first time Kevin, Mike (my band-mates from The Torcher Chamber Ensemble) and I heard Shayfer James play his stories, it was in a performance space called The Whistling Room in the bowels of a mid-renovation church. Maybe it was the context, but being there among mostly strangers, I found myself thinking in charicatures of how I imagined the parishoners who wandered in accidentally to this completely un-churchy event might perceive what was happening. Before he even sang three notes, I imagined them saying things like, "When a man can sing that angelically, you know the devil's got a hand in it." Then the lights dimmed. The mood shifted and Shayfer James attacked the keys with a venom that made me wonder if there might be some metaphoric truth to that preemptive musing. But only for a moment. The music rapidly swept all externalizing thoughts from the room like a giant emotive broom. Once you arrive in the gritty, sardonic, and strangely intense world of Mister James' rhythmic noir piano, and delicately cruel lyrics, well... I don't believe in the devil as anything other than a cultural archetype, but I'll be gladly damned if there wasn't something about that first song that made the captivated audience feel like we may have reached a time in our lives when all that was left to do was BAD THINGS.

If it took a snake to convince a myth to bite into forbidden fruit, Shayfer James is what you'd play to entice the snake of Eden into doing something...it would never do...

We were hooked. And inspired. That show kicked off an intense bout of song-writing, and led to the beginning of a lovely musical friendship and eventual collaboration. Now the very good news. We aren't the only musicians who have been busy. Though I could wax on endlessly about the intriguing literary acumen of the lyrics or the complex shifts between dissonance and ethereal melodic ascents in the new songs, I bet you'd enjoy the music even more. So without further adieu, I invite you to listen to these dark songwriting gems on James' newest album, The Owl and The Elephant.

Early this morning, nearly a million New Yorkers were stunned by the appearance of
a "special edition" New York Post blaring headlines that their city could face
deadly heat waves, extreme flooding, and other lethal effects of global warming
within the next few decades. The most alarming thing about it: the news came from
an official City report.

Distributed by over 2000 volunteers throughout New York City, the paper has been
created by The Yes Men and a coalition of activists as a wake-up call to action on
climate change. It appears one day before a UN summit where Secretary-General Ban
Ki-Moon will push 100 world leaders to make serious commitments to reduce carbon
emissions in the lead-up to the Copenhagen climate conference in December. Ban has
said that the world has "less than 10 years to halt (the) global rise in
greenhouse gas emissions if we are to avoid catastrophic consequences for people
and the planet," adding that Copenhagen is a "once-in-a-generation opportunity."

Although the 32-page New York Post is a fake, everything in it is 100% true, with
all facts carefully checked by a team of editors and climate change experts.

"This could be, and should be, a real New York Post," said Andy Bichlbaum of the
Yes Men. "Climate change is the biggest threat civilization has ever faced, and it
should be in the headlines of every paper, every day until we solve the problem."

The fake Post's cover story ("We're Screwed") reports the frightening conclusions
of a blue-ribbon panel of scientists commissioned by the mayor's office to
determine the potential effects of climate change on the City. That report was
released in February of this year, but received very little press at the time.
Other lead articles describe the Pentagon's alarmed response to global warming
("Clear & Present Disaster"), the U.S. government's sadly minuscule response to
the crisis ("Congress Cops Out on Climate"), China's alternative energy program
("ChinaŐs Green Leap Forward Overtakes U.S."), and how if the US doesn't quickly
pass a strong climate bill, the crucial Copenhagen climate talks this December
could be a "Flopenhagen."

The paper includes original investigative reporting as well. One article ("Carbon
counter counts New Yorkers as fools") reveals that Deutsche Bank - which erected a
seven-story "carbon counter" in central Manhattan - not only invests heavily in
coal-mining companies worldwide, but has recently entered the business of coal
trading itself.

The paper has the world's gloomiest weather page, covering the next 70 years
rather than just 7 days. The "Around the World" section describes the
disproportionate effects of climate change on poorer parts of the world, including
extreme droughts, floods, famines, water shortages, mass migrations and conflicts.
Developing countries will bear the brunt of climate change effects even though
they have done very little to cause the problem.

But the paper isn't all doom and gloom. An article called "New York Fights Back"
notes that the carbon emissions of Big Apple residents are only one third the
national average, and that the city is building 1800 miles of bike paths, planting
one million trees, and replacing its fleet of police cars with hybrids. There's
also a page of black-humor cartoons (in one, Charlie Brown finds Snoopy drowned),
a gossip section that takes no prisoners, and a number of truly cheerful ads - for
sex ("Awesome. No carbon emissions."), tote bags, bicycles, and tap water
("Literally comes right out of your faucet!").

Another ad promotes civil disobedience, encouraging readers to visit
http://BeyondTalk.net and pledge to risk arrest in a planned global action
November 30, just before the conference in Copenhagen.

"We need strong action on climate change," said David Solnit of Mobilization for
Climate Justice West, one of the partners in BeyondTalk.net. "But history shows
that leaders act only when people take to the streets to demand it. That's what
needs to happen now."

This paper is one of 2500 initiatives taking place in more than 130 countries as a
response to the "Global Wake-up Call" on climate change. For more information,

Platform, the project space of Denise Bibro Fine Art, is pleased to present Forever Summer on view for two days only, June 26 and 27, 2009. Organized by Scott Malbaurn, this impromptu salon-style exhibition features small works (maximum 24” x 24”) by more than fifty greater New York City area artists. Malbaurn has brought together a diverse range of artists with eclectic practices and backgrounds for this special celebratory two-day event. In the face of challenging economic times, this show provides the collector with a unique opportunity to purchase small, affordable pieces by emerging artists, as well as offering the artists a forum to meet and discuss their work.

Artist Scott Malbaurn has curated exhibitions at venues including Platform, the project space of Denise Bibro Fine Art,Janet Kurnatowski Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; H. Lewis Gallery, Baltimore, MD; as well as Pratt Institute's 2007 M.F.A. show for the College Art Association Tri-State exhibition at Hunter College, New York, NY. We stepped out of the subway, and a girl was handing out free newspapers on the street.
I almost didn't take it, but she waggled her eyebrow and glanced in such a way that I was inclined to peer down at the paper she held in her hand.
Looking down, I saw this:

My heart swelled and I took the paper. My friend The Past Tense and I stopped dead in the street as headline after headline caught our attention.

"Iraq War Ends"
"Nation Sets Its Sights on Building Sane Economy"
"Ex-Secretary Apologizes for W.M.D. Scare"
"Bush to Face Charges"

We were heading for the Met to look at art, but with this paper in our hands, we detoured immediately, headed for the nearest cafe and sat down to read every article line by line. We were in a state of shock and elation. We couldn't believe this was really happening. Despite our disbelief, our hope soared as we considered the possibility of living in a nation that was suddenly making positive changes in every way. Even the "weather report" at the top seemed indicative of a new political climate. It read, "Today, clouds part, more sunshine, recent gloom passes. Tonight, strong leftward winds. Tomorrow, a new day. Weather map throughout." It seemed vaguely possible that we might be experiencing one of the most incredible moments in America's history. We read on, and the tenor and language of the articles matched the New York Times perfectly. As our inspection continued, however, it seemed less and less likely that this newspaper could be true. On page A5, "Court Indicts Bush on High Treason Charge". Then on A8, "USA Patriot Act Repealed"...

We went back to the front page and realized that the paper was post-dated July 4, 2009, and a box in the upper left read, "All The News We Hope To Print". So it wasn't real. We wondered if it was even printed by the New York Times at all, and decided that if it was, this was an epic artistic event. The idea that arguably one of the best newspapers in the country had the guts to pull off something like this and felt that it was important enough to fund an entire edition of free papers was breathtaking. When I got home, I checked it out, and read on the BBC's website that this was actually created by the Yes Men. (I knew they were brilliantly inventive, but I used to live down the street from one of them, so the idea of them orchestrating such a massive well-concerted effort of political detournement hadn't even occurred to me.)
But the gift of this incredible newspaper into our day suddenly made the world seem a bit brighter. After all, If someone believed in this better world enough to print and distribute 1.2 million copies of this more than special edition, perhaps there is enough here in the rubble of this country to effect positive change, make amends for our government's atrocious deeds, and start approaching a better world.

The other morning, there was a thick and mysterious fog over the city and all the eagles were flying low beneath it right in front of my car window at 7 am.
As I got off the highway,

I saw a dead one laying on the side of the road and
standing upright on its belly was a living eagle. It gestured with its beak toward the unseeing eye of the other, then
it seemed like time slowed with my car, and as I approached, it looked me right in the eye and held my gaze with a
look of such alien sorrow and intelligence.

It felt like we were communicating. some sort of understanding between species passed

between us.

It was wrenching.

I heard from a friend later that eagles mate for life.

Jane Bloodgood-Abrams is inspired and deeply connected to landscape of the Hudson River Valley and its artistic heritage. Her multilayered oil paintings capture profound timeless moments. “ While caught in these fleeting moments, stopped along a road at sunset or standing on a bluff above the river, I feel infused by that moment, allowing it to soak in as much as possible, and then later, after some tempering and distillation through my own psyche, I use that memory to create an image. Bloodgood-Abrams is an elected member of the National Association of Women Artists, she received her M.F.A. from SUNY New Paltz and her Bachelor Studio Arts from The College of St. Rose.

C. Ryder Cooley is a multi-media artist, musician and performer. Weaving together chimeric images with found props and forgotten objects, she creates cinematic performances and installation spaces. Most recently, Ryder has been working with artist Todd Chandler on a series of songs and collaborations called Fall Harbor. Dedicated to presenting work in unique and site specific settings, Ryder has participated in a wide range of public works, educational projects and international shows. Awarded Best Performance Artist of the NY Capital District in 2006 & 2007, selected exhibitions have included: White Box and Exit Art in NYC, Theater Artaud in San Francisco, Contemporary Artist Center in N. Adams MA, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, public art projects in Indonesia, El Salvador, France and the Czech Republic. From 1993-2004 C. Ryder Cooley was an active member of the San Francisco art and music communities. She received a BFA in Sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1993, an MA in Combined Media from SUNY Albany in 2006 and an MFA in Integrated Electronic Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic in 2008. Kristen DeFontes’ prints and collages developed during a train trip from Albany to Manhattan in December of 2007. Through the train window, she took inventory of objects and wildlife that interacted with the Hudson River’s natural landscape. Minimal landscapes capturing the sheer essence of the seasonal color changes were the result. “As I was viewing the river from an already interrupted glance through the train window, I began to make correlations between manmade obstructions within the landscape. Structures like bridges, smokestacks and relics of past industry, became part of my consciousness, and I felt the need to juxtapose them with naturally occurring elements”. Kristen DeFontes currently lives in Altamont, NY. She received her B.F.A. from Purchase College, NY.

Tom Nelson has curated numerous Hudson River painting exhibitions for more than a decade such as The Hudson River Artists and the Catskill Mountains, permanent exhibition at the Mountaintop Historical Society, Haines Falls, NY, 2006; Three Hundred Years of Landscape Painting: Selections from the Collection, Albany Institute of History & Art, Summer 1999; Paradise Lost, Contemporary Landscape Art, Dietal Gallery, Emma Willard School, Troy, NY 1997; The Realism Show, TED Gallery, 1989; The Drawings of John Butler Yeats, Albany Institute, 1986 and Leonard Baskin, AIHA, 1986. Nelson’s passion for the Hudson River School not only extends to his curatorial projects, but also to his own painting of the Hudson River landscape. For thirty years, Nelson has been exhibiting his realist paintings of the Hudson River in gallery’s such as BRIK Gallery, Catskill, NY, Coffey Gallery, Kingston, NY, Gerald Peters Gallery, New York, NY, Union College, Nott Memorial, and The Albany Institute of History & Art, to name just a few. Nelson holds a B.F.A. in painting with departmental honors, from the State University of New York, College at New Paltz.

Known for the photoreal Trompe L’oeil public art paintings commissioned by The City of Albany along the Hudson River Way pedestrian bridge, Jan-Marie Spanard’s personal art making differs in scale and scope. Spanard is the principal artist of AlbanyMural Ltd. located in Albany, New York. AlbanyMural Ltd. is an organization of highly skilled figurative painters who create public artworks, restore historic paintings, and participate in community creative programs. After considerable research, Spanard and her team designed thirty trompe l'oeil still lifes depicting the passage of time in Albany. Spanard’s personal work differs from her public works, and she works in the solitude of the Adirondacks. “In the studio I think about abstract trompe l’oeil painting as a form of communication, as a language. A language that expresses thoughts and feelings that we don't really know how to communicate through written or verbal language. Abstract trompe l'oeil for me works as the intuitive language of visual perception. It's actually a meta-language -- a visual expression or language about something that happens inside us when we come face to face with time, or beauty, or natural events”.

Deborah Webster works as an art educator at Sayles School of Fine Arts at Schenectady High School. Her work embodies the unique patterns of thought and energy systems we create in relationships with one another. The last two decades have been spent exploring relationships through narrative images and more recently in abstract form with mixed media visually creating water systems. Deborah's undergraduate training focused on psychology and art. She holds a master's degree in painting and has received various grants and awards for arts-in-education programs she has developed. She was the recipient of an NEA sponsored residency at the Art Institute of Chicago for two summers and in 2005, Deborah was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to study aboriginal art as she traveled through Australia. Her work has been exhibited in several solo shows as well as numerous juried and invitational exhibits in local and national galleries.

John Whipple is a documentary photographer who has been working in his chosen profession for more than 20 years. While he devoted a period of his life to the restoration and sale of vintage American stringed instruments, photography has remained his prime dedication since picking up a camera. Whipple has been documenting people, places, and objects found along the Hudson River for many years.

The mission of Albany Center Gallery is to promote and exhibit contemporary visual art produced by emerging and established artists living primarily in the region and to inspire interest and provide enjoyment to an increasingly diverse audience. SPARROW
Sparrow lives in the heart of the Catskill Mountains, within the snug village of Phoenicia, New York, with his wife Violet Snow and daughter Sylvia. For Sylvia's 16th birthday, Sparrow gave her Johannes Brahms' Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77, on cassette. Soft Skull Press has published three of Sparrow's books. THOMAS DEVANEY
Thomas Devaney is the author of A Series of Small Boxes (Fish Drum, 2007) and The American Pragmatist Fell in Love (Banshee Press, 1999). Devaney is a Senior Writing Fellow in the English Department at the University of Pennsylvania. He received his MFA in Creative Writing at Brooklyn College, CUNY where he was a student of Allen Ginsberg. In 2001 he joined the Kelly Writers House, Penn's literary hub, for four years as program coordinator and producer of the monthly radio program "Live at the Writers House." Devaney has worked with the Institute of Contemporary Art (Phila) on a number of site specific, multi-sensory projects, including "Tales from the 215" for the Philadelphia Freedom exhibit with Zoe Strauss, and the performance "The Empty House" at the Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site for The Big Nothing exhibit.

JANET HAMILL

Poet, painter, and performer Janet Hamill was born in Jersey City, NJ. For her first five years she gazed across the Hudson from Weehawken, NJ, before the family moved north to New Milford, in Bergen County. In the mid-sixties Janet attended Glassboro State College (now Rowan University), in Glassboro, NJ, where she met life-long friend, singer/songwriter, Patti Smith. After graduating with a BA in English from Glassboro, Janet joined Patti in New York. Using the city as a base, and bookstore jobs as a livelihood, Janet lived out her first love, travel, during her twenties and early thirties. Some of her journeys included cross-country trips in the USA and sojourns in Canada, Mexico, Morocco, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Denmark, England, France, Spain, Italy, and Ireland.

Janet is the author of four books: Lost Ceilings, Nostalgia of the Infinite, The Temple, and Troublante. Her poetry and fiction have appeared in anthologies such as Living With the Animals, Up Late: American Poetry Since 1970, The Low-Tech Manual, The Unmade Bed, and Deep Down: The New Sensual Writing by Women. Some of the magazines and journals that have published her work are Bomb, City Lights Review, Café Review, Long Shot, Colorado North Review, Kansas Quarterly, Exquisite Corpse, Poetry Flash, and the Hart Crane Newsletter.

A strong advocate of the spoken word, Janet has read widely at well known poetry venues such as The Peoples' Poetry Gathering, St. Marks Church and the Walt Whitman Cultural Center. Early in September of 1997, Janet was the featured poet at the first Liss Ard Festival, in Skibbereen, County Cork, Ireland. The festival is held annually to raise world-wide environmental awareness.

In the summer of 1997 Janet began to perform her poetry with the music of Moving Star, a backing group of musicians named after one of her poems. They are Bob Torsello (bass), Jay LoRubbio (guitar) and Sean Healy (drums). In their short time together, Janet and Moving Star have performed at the The People's Poetry Gathering, The Knitting Factory and CBGB's Gallery in New York City, as well as clubs in Orange and Ulster Counties. Recently, Janet and the band released their first full-length CD, Flying Nowhere, produced by Lenny Kaye, with two cameo appearances by Patti Smith on clarinet.

Janet makes her home in New York State.

Animalia is a multi-media inter-species fairytale inspired by the performative behavior of animals and insects. Through aerial movement, projection and live music on singing saw, accordion & up secret bee societies and haunted circus scenes. Exploring metaphors of flight in violence & war, this gender bender narrative travels through a sequence of dystopic tableaux. When the performer falls under the spell of a deer, she at last escapes her humanity and becomes an antlered deer creature. Appropriating the masculine power symbol of the buck “rack” and reinserting it onto a feminine character, the performance blurs the division between masculine/feminine identity and human/animal forms.

Crossing Boundaries

Artist-musician C. Ryder Cooley caps a few years of work with a thesis project that aims to make you feel the connection between human and animal

If you’ve seen C. Ryder Cooley perform, you won’t soon forget her. (And you’ve had numerous chances to see her, as she’s performed all over the Capital Region in venues large and small over the last two years;this Sunday, she’s giving her iEar-MFA thesis performance at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.) You would remember her not just because her songs seem haunted, filled with often unnerving imagery that evoke powerful emotions. It’s not even because she’s compelling and entertaining. It’s because she’s the woman with the accordion—and the deer head. An actual stuffed deer head, which is, inevitably, a visual focal point.

While the artist herself provides a longer answer to the obvious question—“Why a deer head?”—this description supplied by the New York City gallery-performance space Exit Art about a 2007 Cooley show is pretty good shorthand: “C. Ryder Cooley performs with her collaborator, a disembodied deer who once hung as a trophy on a hunter’s wall. Together they . . . construct a third body, a post-gender antlered being who hovers chimerically in a space betwixt forest and civilization.”

“I started with the deer a couple of years ago when I was on an artists’ retreat Northern Vermont, in the winter.” Cooley remembers. “I had been living out on the West Coast for a long time—in the city, San Francisco—so I hadn’t had a lot of extended time just out in the wild, in the middle of winter.”

“I found these deer—they were actually on a deer farm,” she adds. “I got kind of obsessed with them, and I visited them everyday, and observed them. I talked with the deer farmer.”

Her first reaction—remember, this was during the height of the first wave of pro-Iraq War feeling—was to make a connection to violence. “I got very interested in the growth and the shedding of the antlers . . . [and] the violent implications of the antlers.”

In her vision, Cooley connected the shedding of the antlers with disarmament—but this didn’t last long.

“It turned into this internal fairy tale for me,” she remembers, “with these deer characters and thinking about becoming a deer.”

Now, many of you are probably wondering, um, what could this person possibly be thinking? You should try to keep an open mind, because it’s a compelling dream world that Cooley has conjured up and translated into art, a world that is both appealing and off- putting, amusing and baffling. And part of what makes it work is that there’s nothing ironic about her point of view, which is suffused with a disarming sense of wonder.

Case in point: A video Cooley made of a journey she took along Route 2 in Western Massachusetts last summer, and in and around North Adams. The video captures Cooley (wearing deer-antler headgear and carrying her accordion) singing trackside as a Boston & Maine freight goes by; next to a seemingly abandoned warehouse; and in the MASS MoCA parking lot, where, amusingly, security shoos her away. (News flash: Internationally oriented avant-garde art space chases away avant-garde artist.) Sometimes you can hear her; sometimes she’s drowned out by environmental sounds. Nothing fazes her, however; she’s completely into what she’s doing. When she poses by a road sign for the monthly meeting of the North Adams Elks, with its antlered logo, it’s a very amusing juxtaposition.

“That day of playing the serenades around North Adams,” Cooley says, “it’s so much in the moment, having to do with the environment and happenstance.” It doesn’t matter, she says, that no one is there to see her: “In a way, those performances seem more magical.”

At one point in the video, Cooley climbs what seems like a rickety train-signal catwalk over the railroad mainline. It’s actually kind of scary—and someone must have noticed, because some railroad workers arrive to force her back down.

Asked about this, Cooley says, “I don’t know why I feel compelled [to do those things].”

“It didn’t feel rickety,” she adds about the catwalk, “it just seemed like a magical spot. I really like being up off the ground.”

Fascinatingly, Cooley turns this back around to theme of transcending the line between human and animal: “I see all these animals, and they’re up off the ground; even the squirrels. Squirrels run through the building here at RPI. They’ll be almost completely upside down, scurrying along the ceiling. . . . They have a completely different sense of gravity. It’s so compelling.”

Asked about her thesis show, Animalia: Stories of Collapse, Calamity and Departure, Cooley explains that “the trick right now is creating a performance for a theater space that still has these moments”—meaning the kind of “magical moments” that she found, by herself, in out-of-the-way places.

It’s a multimedia show, with performance and video: “I’m working with a lot of video footage that I’ve shot at different times and on different adventures.”

“It’s embracing this whole body of work that I’ve been building on over the past two years,” she says. “It’s like an interspecies fairy tale that I’m weaving together from all these small performances into a longer, 40-minute feature-length narrative.”

“I’m collaborating musically,” she says, “with another graduate student here at RPI, Todd Chandler; he’s a big part of the performance.” (They’re also in a band together, Down River.)

Asked what it is, exactly, that she does, she pauses.

“I feel like it’s not totally performance art—I mean performance art is pretty loosely de fined—but it’s more abstract.”

If you think about it, you see what she means. Much performance art—at least as it’s often perceived—is more directly revealing. Cooley’s is not.

What should an audience expect Sunday afternoon at RPI?

“The performance is actually in a building which is a bit hard to get to,” she says. “So I’m inviting people to meet in the parking lot of West Hall. The performance will almost have started in the parking lot; even though I won’t be there, there will be some special ‘characters’ there to meet people and escort them to the performance space. So, it will be a kind of journey. And there should be some enchantments along the way to the performance.”

“I really like to do these kind of performances or installations where people can really be a part of it,” she says “and experience it on more of a visceral level, as opposed to it being more passive [for the] audience.”

Animalia will be presented in the RPI Darren Communications Center, Room 174, 8th Street, Troy, on Sunday (March 2) at 5 PM. Meet at 4:30 PM in the West Hall upper parking lot; admission is free. C. Before moving to Troy, I lived in Toronto, and used to show work at a hip cafe/bar downtown called The Green Room. One of my friends is curating there now, and is putting up a new show. The show is going to hang on Sunday, Jan 27. The opening party will be held the following Thursday, on the 31st. He needs more art (It's a gargantuan two-floor venue). I told him about how much talent there is in our neck of the woods and he agreed to accept international submissions.

So, here's the deal:

If your work is picked, they'll make large prints to hang in the show. Not a lot sells there, but it's really great exposure, and it can't hurt to have a Toronto show on your resume.
There's no charge. They foot the bill for the print, and if it sells, they send you the money.
If your work isn't chosen this time, they keep you on file for future shows. Theres a new show every month. He'll email you if your work gets chosen.

Include your name and contact info, the name of each piece and an asking price for the print if it sells. The type of artwork they usually hang is pretty bizarre/ cutting edge, so send your best and strangest stuff. Don't be shy.

Writing on this thing feels a bit like whispering through a cigarette burn in a tablecloth. We all dined on a snowflake soaked in rose water, but the introductions were forsaken. Let's begin with an ancient Sufi practice called 'the cube'. It is a free association excercise. Begin by visualizing a desert with only sand and sky. You are not in the picture. I will list 5 objects, so add each one cumilatively to your space, and be sure to record where they are in relation to each other.
The first item I want you to imagine is a cube.
2. a ladder
3. a plant
4. a horse
5. a storm
Now take a second to mark any important details you may have missed, (like the character and activity of the horse, or what your cube is made of, hollow/solid, and how the storm affects these other objects), then continue. This is not a prophetic device, it is merely used in a Lacanian sense to interpret your current perceptions. Here is what they say each item represents: the cube is you, the ladder is your friends, the plant is your creativity, the horse is your love (human or abstract), and the storm is trouble. I'd be interested to hear how this works for you, what bits were surprising or accurate. I had a whole rant about why that happens, why symbols replace fact when pack animals are living in a hive society, how they are necessarily forced to partake of a shared psychosis, which tricks them into a lack of comprehension with regard to connectivity (like how we think we have a democracy because the president is supposed to be just a "stand-in" for the rest of us, or how it took us so long to realize the dual nature of particles/waves, and internal multiplicity). Luckily for you I accidentally deleted it when I tried to get rid of those absurd emoticons before posting this. A friend of mine always says, "what doesn't kill you only makes you stranger", but that isn't really true...if someone decided at the last minute not to murder you, and instead to take you out for an apologetic cup of coffee (you know, the kind that's made really strong with escapee grinds that cuddle up to your gums like ants), then afterwards, even though they didn't kill you, they'd make you a bit less of a stranger, wouldn't they? Stranger relationality is so funny. Like the alleged "death of modernism". If anyone reads this, I'd like to hear about your cube. As the young Newton wrote, "my poore helpp." All my e-cups and saucers are dirty. Thank you for coming to my tea party. Please don't tell anyone my friends are invisible.

"STORY LINES," an exhibition of recent paintings by Jack Millard opens at the Hudson Opera House (327 Warren St.) on August 23rd and runs to September 20th. The OPENING RECEPTION is on August 23rd from 6-8pm, with music provided by C. Ryder Cooley and refreshments.
"Story Lines" represents a new series of large paintings exploring the complex relationships between individual subjects. Combining a wide variety of styles and techniques, including portraiture, landscape, abstraction and explorations in color and form. "Story Lines" draws the viewer's attention to compelling settinmgs and to tensions between individuals. The paintings in this series are ambitious in scale, technical intricacy and psychological complexity, inviting viewers to contemplate (and complete) the narrative journeys of their subjects.
Columbia County artist Jack Millard lives and paints in Chatham, New York. He practiced architecture in New York City, working for Paul Rudolph and Peter Marino. Millard has previously shown his paintings at Carrie Haddad Gallery, Time,Space Limited and elsewhere. He designs chairs that are sold through Dennis Miller Associates in New York.

ZOTERO: Free Integrated Research Tools? Why would anyone want to help smart people?

.....I've just found out about what seems like the best gift any student or researcher could possibly receive (other than love and straight A plusses), and it doesn't cost the user one ugly penny. This extension's reach extends much farther than anything I've heard of before.
I'm in the middle of applying to an absurd amount of graduate programs, so this is a very timely discovery. I have insane amounts of information to organize and store (essays, websites, deadlines, addresses: you name it), so this magic lamp looks like the one I want to rub. I'll be taking Zotero for a test drive, and when my applications are finished, I'll let you know how it measured up to my gargantuan expectations. If you'd like to explore it yourself, here's some relevant data:
